What Does Self-Healing Emotionally Mean?

Before we get into how we can heal ourselves emotionally, let's understand what self-healing truly means.

Healing yourself emotionally isn't about getting rid of or ignoring painful memories you have or your emotions, instead, it's about acknowledging those feelings and emotions, understanding the reasons behind them, and then taking care of yourself so you can get back to a place of peace. It is a journey of self-reflection, self-compassion, and self-love.

Healing yourself emotionally is a commitment you make to yourself for your own well-being. Addressing the pain you are experiencing or the feeling of being stuck, will allow you to overcome these emotions, and heal. It's a brave and selfless choice you make for yourself.

5 Ways to Heal Yourself Emotionally

Life has an innate ability to throw us curveballs which often leave our hearts a little bruised and our minds a little weary.

The amazing thing about us human beings is that within each of us lies the power to heal, to overcome what's going on emotionally and mentally, and to emerge stronger than before.

Here we explore five powerful ways to heal yourself that can help nurture your emotional well-being and bring you a step closer to a better you.

01. Practice Self-Compassion

Self-compassion is like a soothing balm for your soul.

It's about extending the same kindness and understanding to yourself that you would offer to a very good friend. Dr. Kristen Neff's research at the University of Texas has revealed the transformative power of self-compassion.

Embracing self-compassion can significantly reduce feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress, while simultaneously enhancing your overall well-being.

Practicing self-compassion means treating yourself with patience and gentleness, especially during times of struggle. Instead of harsh self-criticism, offer yourself words of comfort and encouragement. Learn and practice the art of positive affirmations.

You can begin by simply noticing the way you speak to yourself. If your inner dialogues are normally filled with criticism and negativity, replace them.

Cultivating self-compassion takes practice and patience, and is a journey in itself so take one small step at a time. So, always remember to be gentle with yourself, especially in times of struggle.

02. Talk It Out

We feel - and sometimes those feelings are gentle waves and other times, they're like scary turbulent waves. And when we bottle up those turbulent waves, it might threaten to overwhelm and drown us.

Honestly, there is power in talking it out with someone. It can be a close friend, a family member, or a professional. Talking to someone about your feelings and about what you're going through can sometimes feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.

By confiding in someone, an opinion, support, or advice from a third party can shed some light on the positive and can sometimes provide you with some form of clarity. Even if you need someone to just listen, that too can do a lot of good and provide some form of relief.

Sometimes, just hearing yourself express your emotions out loud can just be what you need to put things into perspective.

It's a way to release pent-up feelings, gain clarity, and find acceptance in the fact that you're not alone in your struggles.

Always remember that your emotions are valid, regardless of whether it is seen as negative or positive. Honoring and expressing your emotions validates your experiences paving the way towards healing and growth.

03. Forgive Yourself

Forgiving yourself is vital in emotional healing. When we hold on to guilt, shame, or resentment towards ourselves for past mistakes, shortcomings, or feelings of inadequacy, we carry an emotional burden that weighs us down and holds us back from moving forward.

Forgiving yourself is about acknowledging you are human, recognizing that everyone makes mistakes, and everyone at some point or many points in their lives goes through grief, trauma, and struggles.

By forgiving yourself, you free up mental and emotional energy that can be directed towards healing and growth. You create space for self-compassion, allowing yourself to learn from past experiences, accept them, make amends where necessary, and move forward with greater wisdom and resilience.

So, as you practice self-compassion on your journey toward emotional healing, remember to extend forgiveness to yourself as well. Embrace your imperfections, honor your humanity, and let go of the burdens that weigh you down.

04. Face Your Emotions Head On

This might be among the most difficult to do. It'd be easier to just brush your emotions aside and forget about it. The thing is when you brush them aside and hide them, it's not really gone. You're just trying to suppress your emotions which can be detrimental in the long run.

Although it will hurt, facing difficult emotions head-on is a necessary step in the healing process.

As someone who lost a brother last year so suddenly without any rhyme or reason, I was left feeling a variety of emotions - anger, grief, sadness, despair - I still do. So many questions, and so much emotion. For a long time, I felt like my life was a movie, it didn't seem real. At the same time, life seemed at a standstill but picking up the pieces of broken hearts around me. I will always grieve and I might never heal from my loss but I am slowly accepting the fact that he is never coming back.

Giving myself the grace to feel all the emotions has helped me in my journey. Yes, as a family, we've all lost a piece of our hearts and we will never stop grieving. Our lives look a little different now but we're slowly moving forward, slowly learning to cope and live with the pain, slowly healing in a way.

05. Look at How Far You've Come and Be Thankful

In the midst of life's challenges and struggles, it's easy to lose sight of how far we've come on our healing journey. But taking a moment to pause and reflect on our progress can be incredibly powerful and transformative.

Think back to where you were when you first began your healing journey. Perhaps you were overwhelmed by pain, consumed by self-doubt, or struggling to find meaning and purpose in your life. Now, consider how much you've grown, evolved, and overcome since then.

Take stock of the obstacles you've faced, the lessons you've learned, and the inner strength you've discovered along the way. Celebrate the small victories, the moments of courage, and the milestones of progress that have brought you to where you are today.

And as you reflect on your progress, allow yourself to feel a sense of gratitude for how far you've come. Be thankful for the resilience that has carried you through the darkest of times, for the support of loved ones who have stood by your side, and for the inner wisdom that has guided you on your journey.

Gratitude is a powerful antidote to negativity and despair. By focusing on the blessings in your life and acknowledging the progress you've made, you cultivate a sense of appreciation and contentment that nourishes your soul and uplifts your spirit.

So, take a moment to look back on how far you've come in your healing journey, and be thankful for every step forward, no matter how small.
