Korean Skincare Products. So What's The Hype All About?
Skincare is getting out of hand. But in the best possible way.
There are so many products out there, and it can be quite hard to keep up.
One day, people are all about retinol, then we're slammed with how many derivatives of retinol there are. Then, on the opposite end, we were introduced to snail slime! Who would have ever imagined that snail slime would actually make your skin glow? Definitely not me.
If your bathroom shelf is already packed, but like me, you're game for testing new products, you might want to look at what the Koreans have to offer. That's if you haven't already.
They are literally everywhere. You see them on Instagram. On TikTok. Everywhere. Everyone seems to be using them, and their skin somehow shows the proof that this stuff actually works.
I must say that I've had my share of trying out skincare products, high-end and not-so-high-end. What I can say is that just because they're pricey doesn't mean they'll work. Not for my skin, at least.
But the Korean products I've tried, wow. Just wow. Not only are they affordable, but they actually do something for my skin. Whether it's a hydrating toner, a vitamin C, or a serum, they're good. You wouldn't think they'll work because of the price and they're lightweight consistency, but they do the job.
Of course, there are ones that are just, meh. But overall, they're worth trying out.
If you've been thinking of giving Korean skincare products a go but don't know where to start, here's what I've learned.
Why Korean Skincare Products Are Taking Over
Why are these skincare products such a hit right now?
It's not about hiding flaws, it's about fixing the root
What stood out to me right away is that Korean skincare isn't about trying to just cover things up. It actually helps your skin heal. Instead of drying out your pimples or layering on heavy creams to hide redness, the products work slowly and gently to get your skin healthy again.
The goal isn't instant results. Consistency is what matters. So over time, your skin starts looking smoother, clearer, and brighter, all on its own.
I mean, I have never heard about skin barrier creams and about healing your skin barrier before the Korean skincare craze came about. And it actually makes a lot of sense once you really look into it.
Ingredients that actually make sense (and don't burn your face off)
I used to try products that promised clear skin but left me with burning cheeks or peeling, raw skin.
Korean products don't do that.
They're made with ingredients that have been around for ages, like green tea, centella (a soothing plant), and rice water. And yes, even snail mucin. Sounds weird, but it's so good for hydration and healing scars.
Most of these products are gentle. They don't have alcohol or strong fragrance, so if your skin freaks out easily, this stuff feels like a relief.
Good skincare doesn't have to be expensive
This is one thing I love. You don't have to spend a ton to get really good quality skincare that works.
I've found amazing serums and sunscreens under $30. And that means you can try out what suits your skin without feeling guilty. If something doesn't work, it's not a big loss.
But when it does work, wow. Game changer.
Korean brands are always a few steps ahead
They're not just following trends. They're making those trends. Sheet masks? BB creams? Cushion foundations? All from Korea.
And they keep improving textures and formulas so things feel nice on your skin, and not sticky or heavy. Even their packaging is cute but practical.
You can tell that Korean brands actually care about what they're making. Everything feels well thought out, from how the product feels on your skin to how easy it is to use.
The Basics of Korean Skincare
People always say Korean skincare routines have 10, 11, 12, 17, 21 steps. Who knows really, but honestly? You don't need all that. Just a few key things, done right, can make a huge difference.
Here are the basics that you would want to know.
Cleansing (Start with a Clean Slate)
This part changed everything for me.
It's known that the Koreans were the ones who started this whole double cleanse trend. And Korean skincare usually starts with a double cleanse.
I cannot tell you how double cleansing has changed my skin, and I wish it had been around 20 or 30 years ago. Maybe it was, but was never made popular like it is today. You double cleanse with a balm or oil to remove your SPF and makeup, then you follow that with a gentle foaming cleanser to clean off any sweat, dirt, and oil leftover.
It sounds a lot, but it's really not. And it really helps. Your skin will feel cleaner, but not tight or dry.
Toner (Preps Your Skin)
Forget the old-school toners you used to know. The one that stings and dries out your skin?
Korean toners prep your skin for what's next and are more like a soft drink for your skin. They add a bit of hydration (some add a whole lot!) and they help your next skincare products sink in better.
Essence (Like a Magic Water)
Essence is that step in your skincare routine between toner and serum. Korean essences can be anything from light to slightly creamy, but they do add moisture and help your skin feel bouncy.
Honest, it's one of my favorite steps. You'll definitely see the benefit, especially if your skin looks and feels dull.
Serum (Target Your Skin Problem)
This is where you pick something based on what your skin needs or problems that your skin might have. Acne? Hyperpigmentation? Dark spots? Dryness? Fine lines?
There is something for each skin issue you might have.
And you don't need seven serums. Just one or two that fit your skin.
Moisturizer (Lock It All In)
This step seals all the skincare products that you've put on before this. Korean moisturizers are light, and you might think they could not possibly be able to do the job, seeing how light they are, but they do an amazing job.
Even if you have oily skin, you need this step.
Sunscreen (Your Skin's Daily Protection)
This is the most important step. Even if you skip everything else.
I get extremely uncomfortable when I run out of my favorite sunscreen and might not be wearing any for the day. Even if I'm at home the whole day. And yes, I wear sunscreen at home because I'm in front of my screen a lot, and my desk faces a large window (which I'm so grateful for).
Korean sunscreens are super wearable. Again, they are lightweight and unlike the sunscreens that we've grown up knowing. They don't have any white cast and are not sticky. They're also popular with sunsticks and sprays and that make it extremely convenient for replenishing your sun protection throughout the day when you're out and about.
Face Masks
On top of the basics above, the Koreans produce the best face masks. The amazing thing is that they have face masks for Every. Single. Thing.
Whether you're looking to boost collagen, increase hydration, plump up or firm your skin, or tame dark spots, Korean face masks are great at adding intensely concentrated ingredients to give you that almost instant effect.
Not only that, but their masks come in various styles, like sheet masks, wash-off masks, peel-off masks, overnight masks, under-eye masks, and neck masks.
25 Korean Skincare Products That Are Totally Worth Trying
Here are 25 Korean products that are currently making the rounds and trending just because they are that good. I have tried quite a number of them, and I cannot deny the fact that they just simply are.
Cleansers
Toners
Essences
Serums

Moisturizers
Sunscreens

Face Masks
If You're Thinking About Trying It.....
You'll have to pick one or two things and see how your skin feels. You don't need a full shelf of products. Just a few good ones can change how your skin looks and feels. But chances are, after trying one or two, you'll probably end up with a full shelf anyway!
Korean skincare will not fix all your skin issues overnight, but if you want something gentle, effective, and not crazy expensive, it's a pretty good place to start. Remember that consistency is important!
