13 PHRASES PARENTS SHOULD SAY TO THEIR TEENS

phrases for teens

Parenting a teenager is a wild ride, isn't it? There are the good bits and not-so-good ones, but overall, as a parent, I rank the teenage years as pretty freaking awesome!

The thing is in this stage of their lives, and where we are in ours, we tend to get lost in the chaos of everyday life. We see our teens in passing sometimes, barely getting a word in or having time to truly catch up with them. And at the back of our minds, we know that we don't have much time with them before they are off to college and experiencing life on their own, outside of the home we've comfortably had them in for so many years.

Sometimes we lose sight that our teens are having a tough time, struggling, juggling between school, their changing bodies and emotions, their social surroundings, expectations and so much more.

In the chaos and the constant tug-of-war we have with them, we lose sight that they need us more now than ever. To be seen, to be heard, to be appreciated, and to be loved. We lose sight because sometimes they don't make us feel like they need us. They push us away. But in actual fact even if they push away, we shouldn't just walk away. The more they pull away, the more we have to stand our ground and try, try harder.

The communication with our teenagers shouldn't stop just because they start grunting at us, give one-word answers, or hide behind their closed doors. The times when they actually spend time with us, however little, whether in the car or at the dinner table or the occasional conversation in the kitchen should be made into opportunities to remind them how much they are loved and that you are there for them for anything.

What you say and the phrases we use in these moments can make a world of difference in our relationships with our teenagers. Our teens need a stable anchor and we can be that for them.

By saying the right things, we're not just communicating, we're building a foundation of trust, love, and understanding.
